Matthias "Matt" Hoffman (1865-1943)

This unidentified newspaper article, hand-dated May 1943, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    FORMER LOWELL MERCHANT DIES AT HAMMOND HOME

    Matthias Hoffman, 77, last survivor of a family of ten brothers and sisters, passed away at his home in Hammond, Sunday. He owned and operated a general store, the Red Front, in the building now occupied by Hathaway's Market, about forty years ago, disposing of the business to Ruge Brothers. From Lowell he returned to Dyer, where he operated a store for many years until retiring and moving to Hammond several years ago. He was born in Dyer, October 19, 1865.

    He is survived by his widow, Ottila, four daughters, Mrs. Rose Rogers of Decatur, Mich., Mrs. Sylvia Simon of Vincennes, Miss Agnes Hoffman of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Waldemar Echterling of Hammond; a son, Leo, of Dyer, and eight grandchildren, with one grandson serving in the army, and another in the navy.

    Funeral services were held yesterday in Hammond, with interment at Dyer.
