The following March 20, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:

Max Mathis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Mathis of Rural Route 1, who enlisted in the Marine Corps March 4th, has been sent to South Carolina for recruit training. He would like for friends to write to him and sends the following address: Pvt. Maxwell D. Mathis 129-5696 PLT 242, "B" Co., 5th R-T Bn., Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
