Oliver Burgess Ross (1844-1903)
- Oliver Burgess Ross was born in Fredericktown, Ohio, May 1st, 1844. When about ten years old he came with his parents to Lake County, Indiana, and settled at Orchard Grove. From there they came and located on a farm four miles outset of Crown Point, and he remained at home until the autumn of 1863, when he became a private in Co. G. 12th Indiana Cavalry. He was discharged from the service of the United States the 30th day of October 1865 at Columbus, Ohio, after which he returned home and was married to Miss Ida Davis May 1st, 1873.
Mr. Ross was taken ill about four weeks ago while caring for his wife, who died three days prior to his death. He died June 23, 1903, after four weeks of intense suffering, at the age of 59 years, 1 month, and 22 days.
He leaves an only son, Melvin, and three sisters and three brothers besides many relatives and friends to mourn his loss. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church by Rev. T.F. Drake, and in the funeral procession were twenty-five comrades who buried him with military honors.
