A copy of the following, hand-written by Pauline Lamphier Hettinger on the front of an envelope, was found in a scrapbook owned by Betty Burton of Lowell:
- Started carrying mail as a substitute carrier Feb. 1, 1919, age 18.
There were 17 men & 1 woman (me) taking x ams at court house in Crown Point. Postmaster told me I had the highest average of all.
The following February 24, 1921, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 5:
Delayed Marriage Notice
Married, September 27, 1920, at Decatur, Ill., Miss Pauline Lamphier to Henry Hettinger. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Lamphier, and is a young lady who has a large circle of friends. For a long time she was the rural carrier on route three out of Lowell. While the notice of her marriage is a little late, her many friends will join us in extending congratulations and best wishes. They will make their home in Whiting, where Mr. Hettinger has a position with the Standard Oil Co.Return to Biographies.
