The following eptember 13, 1928, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 1, column 3:

    DROWNED AT CEDAR LAKE

PETER SCHREIBER, MERCHANT, WALKED OFF PIER. DEAD WHEN TAKEN OUT.

Peter Schreiber, 30 years of age, merchant at Cedar Lake, was drowned off the pier near the Monon depot about 1 p.m. Tuesday. He was in the water about fifteen minutes before his body was recovered. Word was immediately sent to Crown Point for their pulmotor and in a short time it arrived, but was used without effect, as he was past any human aid when taken from the water.

According to the testimony of Carl Stelling at the inquest held by Deputy Coroner William Sheets, he saw Mr. Schreiber walking towards the end of the pier with a fishing pole in his hand preparatory to doing some fishing. When at the end of the pier he seemed to not realize that he was so near the end for he walked right off the pier into the water. He was seen to struggle after striking the water but before aid could get to him he had gone under the water. Every indication is that he met death by drowning and that will be the verdict of Depury Coroner Sheets.

The deceased, in partnership with his brother, conducted grocery stores at Cedar Lake and Cook. He was well known all over this section and had the esteem of all who knew him.

No arrangements as yet have been made for the funeral services.
