Ray Theodore "Ted" Tappan

A July 13, 1944, Lowell Tribune article (page 2, column 2) mentioned that Ray Tappan had enlisted recently for special navy assignment and was inducted June 21. Mention of this assignment was also made on page 6, column 2 of the same issue of the paper.

This February 22, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:

    Ted Tappan, a graduate of Lowell high in 1944, was among the class of 122 sailors graduated Feb. 10th from the naval air technical training center at Memphis, Tenn. As an aviation ordnance man, Ted was also upped to Seaman 1/c. His mother, Mrs. W.C. Tappan of Lowell, and his cousin, Jean Hicks, of Hammond attended the exercises and spent a few days with him. He wishes to be remembered to all his friends in Lowell.
    Another son of the Tappans, Cpl. Walter C. Tappan, who has been serving as a tail gunner in the army air corps the past 19 months, writes that he is well and getting along nicely.
This June 7, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
    Theodore Tappan, S 1/c, navy air corps, stationed at Corpus Christi, Texas, writes his parents, the Walter Tappans, that he has received his wings and has been assigned to a crew for training.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the September 6, 1945, issue (page 2, column 1):
    Ray "Ted" Tappan writes that he has been promoted to Petty Officer 3/c as an Aviation Ordnance man, effective Sept. 1st.
    Ted enlisted as a combat aircrewman, after graduating from Lowell high school. In July, 1944, he was sent to Jacksonville, Fla., for "boot" training, then was transferred to Memphis, Tenn., where he completed a course of study at the naval air technical training center in Feb. 1945. He was returned to Jacksonville and completed his course of study at the naval air gunner's school. In May, after arriving at Corpus Christi, Tex., for operational training on a PBM he received his wing as a gunner.
    Ted is looking forward to seeing his friends in Lowell soon.
This November 15, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:
    Aviation Ordnance Mechanic 3/c, Theodore Tappan, combat air crewman, stationed at Corpus Christi, Texas, is home on a 12 day furlough with his parents, the Walter Tappans. "Skip" Beier of Schneider is also stationed at the same camp.
A November 29, 1945, Lowell Tribune article (page 2, column 2) about Walter Tappan, Jr., mentioned that Ted Tappan was also home from service at that time.
