Raymond "Ray" Barkey (died 1944)
The following Nov. 2, 1944, Lowell Tribune article exerpt was found on page 1, column 6:
TWO MORE LOCAL BOYS ON LATEST CASUALTY LIST
PVT. RAYMOND BARKEY KILLED IN ACTION; M/SGT GENE RULEY MISSING
Two more boys from this vicinity were added to a rapidly growing casualty list this week when Pvt. Raymond Barkey of Rose Lawn was reported dead from wounds and M/Sgt. Gene Ruley of Lowell was reported missing.Pvt. Barkey, son of the John Barkeys, Rose Lawn, died in an army hospital on October 7th in Holland, from wounds suffered the previous day in action with the Germans.
A member of the paratroops, Pvt. Barkey, 20, had been wounded once before on June 6th and had gone back into action on June 18. He was awarded the Purple Heart at that time.
Pvt. Barkey was graduated from Lowell high school in 1942 and enlisted in the service a short time later.
A brother, T/Sgt. Mervin Barkey, 23, gunner-engineer on a Flying Fortress, has been a prisoner of war in Germany since his plane was forced down over that country last February 24th. Two sisters of the Barkeys live in this vicinity, Mrs. Etha Schreiber of Brunswick, and Mrs. Mildred Martin, Schneider. . . .
This vicinity, which has had more than its share of casualities, now has 9 killed in action, 7 missing, 15 wounded and 2 are prisoners of war in Germany.
A June 7, 1945, Lowell Tribune article (page 2, column 2) about Mervin Barkey adds the following about his brother Raymond:
- A brother, Ray Barkey, also a graduate of Lowell high school in 1942, died of wounds received in action in Holland, October 6, 1944. Ray was wounded the first time on June 6, 1944, but had recovered and gone back into action.
