This unidentified newspaper article, hand-dated Jan. 4, 1945, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

One of Last Civil War Vets Called

Rev. George R. Streeter, 96, last remaining Civil War veteran in Hammond, and as far as we could learn, in Lake County, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ethel Holway, in that city, after a short illness. He had been a resident of Hammond for a number of years and was pastor of the Methodist church there for many years before his retirement from the ministry.

He was born and reared in New York State, where he enlisted in the Union army and served until the close of the war between the states.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Hammond last Thursday with interment made in the cemetery at New Carlisle, Ind.

He is survived by his daughter and one grandson, Chester P. Holway, who is in the U.S. air corps, and is now stationed at Washington, D.C.

Lowell's last surviving Civil War veteran, John Taylor, passed away four years ago.
