The following October 18, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
    Fifty relatives and close friends gathered in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sharkey, Sr., Tuesday evening for a six o'clock dinner and farewell party honoring their son, Richard, who enlisted in the Marines. "Dick" left for Chicago yesterday (Wednesday) and expects to be sent to San Diego for boot training. This popular kid, who graduated from L.H.S. with the class of '50, will surely be missed by his many friends who wish him the best of everything.
The following November 1, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
    Dick Sharkey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sharkey, Sr., who enlisted in the Marines on October 17th, is receiving basic training in California. Address: Pvt. Richard F. Sharkey, 1230267-U.S.M.C., Platoon 356, A Co., First Recruit Training Blt., San Diego, Calif.
The following November 22, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 3:
    This week finds Dick Sharkey on a mountainous rifle range 23 miles from his base at San Diego, Calif., where he will spent 3 rugged weeks in combat practice. Last week he was instructed in bayonet usage. Dick does like the weather and has met some fellows from this area whom he competed against in H.S. athletics. Dick is with the Marine Corps and the boys are working double time constantly, allowing only precious little time to call their own. He will appreciate receiving cards and letters from home folks. Address: Pvt. Richard F. Sharkey 1230267, USMC, Platoon, 356, A Co., F.R.T. Blt., San Diego, Calif.
A December 27, 1951, Lowell Tribune article (page 2, column 1) listed Dick Sharkey as one of many servicemen from the Lowell vicinity arriving home for the holidays.

The following January 3, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 4:
    Dick Sharkey of the Marine Corps left Chicago, via train, Sunday morning returning to San Diego, Calif. He did not get to see his brother, Jim, also of the Marine Corps, stationed in Tennessee, who arrived Sunday afternoon to spend the New Year's weekend with their parents, the Robert Sharkeys, Sr.
The following January 17, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 6:
    Dick Sharkey, who recently completed recruit training with the Marine Corps at San Diego, sends a new address to the Tribune and Lowell friends: Pfc. Richard F. Sharkey 1230267, Barstow Annex, (M.C.D. of S.) General Supply Yermo whse. No. 3, Barstow, Calif.
The following February 21, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
    A letter received this week by the Sharkeys from their son, Dick, who is also a Marine Corps enlistee, tells of a weekend in the home of his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Grimes. The Grimeses reside about 100 miles from Barstow, California, where Dick is stationed.
This March 27, 1952 Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 5, column 6:
    The Robert Sharkeys, Sr., were recipients of two phone calls recently, when their sons, both serving in the Marine Corps called from California to wish Mrs. Sharkey a happy birthday. Jim left last Friday for Japan and sends the following new address: Pfc. James B. Sharkey 1180154, FMAW, c/o F.P.O., San Francisco, Calif.

    Dick's call brought good news that will interest his many friends at home. After serving as a Pfc. for only 2 ½ months, Dick has been awarded the rating of corporal and is eagerly looking forward to a visit home the last of April.

An April 24, 1952, Lowell Tribune article on page 2, column 4 mentioned that Marine Dick Sharkey, stationed in California, anticipated a 20-day leave starting April 27th.

The following May 8, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:
    The many friends of "Dick" Sharkey wish him a most pleasant vacation. Dick, who is with the Marine Corps, is home on leave from California.

    Visits Dick Sharkey

    Recently while the Elmer Gerners were touring in California with the Thorne Clarks and daughter, Margaret, they enjoyed a short visit with their former employee at their Standard station, Cpl. Richard F. Sharkey, at the Yermo Marine Base near Barstow, Calif. They found Dick looking great and doing well at his post in the officers' quarters near the main gate.

    Anyone going out California way via Las Vegas or Barstow may see Dick at the Marine base in a matter of ten or fifteen minutes after making your request at the main gate which is right on the highway. Our service men appreciate having home town folks stop by to see them.

The following July 10, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeard on page 2, column 1:
    Cpl. Dick Sharkey writes that he is pitching and managing a softball team for his Marine base at Barstow, Calif. Thus far, the team has won 11 of 14 games with Dick hurling several of the victories
The following August 14, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:

    Dick Sharkey Hurls in All-Star Game

    Clippings from his base newspaper at Barstow, Calif., sent to his parents by Dick Sharkey, reveal that Dick has developed into a top flight softball hurler. Pitching for a picked team of "National League" all-stars against the "American League" all-stars, Dick hurled no-hit, no-run ball and struck out 7 in his 3-inning stint. Another all-star hurler finished the game, which the Nationals won 14-0, allowing 2 hits and no runs while striking out 7. The leading hurler for his team this season, Dick has been instrumental in helping the boys hold a tie for first place at present time. One of his recent victories was a 5-4 12 inning contest.

    Dick, who has been doing office work, is at present assistant in charge of military civilian personnel at the base.

This October 9, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, columnz 2-3:
    Dick Sharkey arrived home Friday from Barstow, California, to enjoy a 12 day leave at the home of his parents, the Robert Sharkeys. Dick is recuperating after two full weeks of hospitalization for treatment of a leg injury sustained while playing football. Upon his return to the Marine Corps Base at Barstow, Dick will be transferred to San Diego, where he has been enrolled in a shorthand course of 12 weeks duration. Dick has been doing clerical work at the General Supply warehouse.
This November 27, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 1, column 6:
    Thanksgiving Day will have added cheer in the Weddle and Sharkey homes for their sons, George and Pat are expected home. In the Sharkey home, however, the family circle will not be complete for Jim is in Korea and Dick in San Diego, both with the Marine Corps.
The following article was found in the Aug. 20, 1953, Lowell Tribune on page 4, column 2:
    In a letter to his parents, the Robert Sharkeys, Dick tells of his arrival in Korea. Stationed close to the front lines, he could hear the "Gooks" talking. A stenographer, he is now permanently (14 months) located in the personnel section headquarters where he is in charge of records along with five others who comprise the office staff.
