    . . . Willard T. Bessette of Cedar Lake, former L.H.S. grid and basketball star, who graduated with the class of '49, has enlisted in the U.S. naval reserves at Gary. He has been assigned to Organized Surface Div. 9-38, under the command of Lt. Benedict. . . .
This April 26, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found page 3, column 4:

    RESERVE SAILOR LEAVES FOR DUTY

    Willard T. Bessette, Cedar Lake, L.H.S. graduate, class of '49, a member of the Organized Surface Division 9-38 of Gary's Naval Reserve battalion, left Sunday for two week's training duty at Great Lakes Naval Station.
The following January 24, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, columns 5-6:
    William Bessette of Cedar Lake, who graduated with the class of '49, is serving with the U.S. Navy, stationed at Glenview, Ill. Address: SA332-27-26, c/o Supply Dept., Box 5, N.A.S., Glenview, Ill.
