Receives Recording of Husband's Radio Talk
Last week Mrs. Betty Buchanan received a recording of part of a recent broadcast from Australia in which her husband, Ensign William Buchanan participated, giving a 15-minute interview on his experiences in the Pacific. Station WLW, Cincinnati, which handled transmission of the broadcast, sent Mrs. Buchanan the recording with their compliments.The following Sept. 7, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2 column 1:
Husband of Local Girl Promoted
Mrs. Betty (Stuppy) Buchanan received word recently that her husband, William Buchanan, had been promoted to Lieut. (j.g.). Lt. Buchanan, who is stationed in Australia, is senior navigator in charge of communications and navigation on his warship. This week he sent as a gift for their little daughter, a small stuffed Koala bear, made from the fur of that rare Australian animal.A July 26, 1945, Lowell Tribune article found on page 2, column 1 listed several young servicemen who were home, among them, Lieut. (j.g.) Wm. A. Buchanan, home from overseas.

At Sea 19 Months
Lt. (j.g.) William A. Buchanan, who recently returned home on a 20-day leave after serving as Senior Communications Officer on the U.S.S. destroyer Hobby the past 19 months, together with his wife, the former Betty Stuppy, and their son, William, Jr., visited his mother, Mrs. Lola Buchanan at Darlington, Ind., last week.Lt. Buchanan left the States on Dec. 26, 1944. His ship served in the campaigns of East New Guinea, West New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago (Admiralty Islands), Western Carolines (Palau), Leyte, Luzon, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He now holds the American Defense ribbon, the American Theatre ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific theatre, and the Philippines Liberation ribbons.
Following his 20-day leave, he will report back to Seattle, Wash., for further assignment.
