PIONEER CITIZEN CALLED BY DEATH
ZENAS C. BURNHAM PASSES AWAY FRIDAY AT AGE OF NEARLY 97 YEARS
Zenas C. Burnham, one of the pioneers of Lake County, passed away at his home in Lowell last Friday night after a few days illness, having reached the age of nearly 97 years. The deceased came to Lake County when a young man and has since made his home here.When he came west, Lake County was small as to population to what it is now, and the large cities in the north part of the county were not known, the land on which they are located be nothing but a vast wilderness. He certainly saw some wonderful changes in the many years in which he was a resident of Lake County.
He was a man who had a wide acquaintance over the county and was very highly respected by all who knew him.
Obituary
Zenas Chappell Burnham was born December 19, 1831 in Berlin Heights, Ohio. He was one of six children of the late Moses Kellogg and Susan Norton Burnham; he is the last of his generation and family tree to fall.Mr. Burnham came with his brother to Lake County some years ago, then returning home to Ohio, only to bring his parents with him to this county in Indiana.
No one needs to say that he knew nothing of the hardships of the yesterdays, yet he counted the days past years ago as happy days compared to these. On Mr. Burnham's return or a year later, July 3, 1857, he was married to Martha F. Wheeler. To this union were born four children, two of whom have gone on, and two sons survive, Herman O. and Fred G. Burnham, both of Lowell, Indiana.
He also leaves two grand-children, Byrl and Bertha.
His parents were of Presbyterian faith, but Mr. Burnham had his own ideas and developed his own opinion in the spiritualist realm.
The wife and mother went on May 20, 1924, and he now goes to meet her at the age of 96 years, 9 months and 9 days.

Funeral services were held at the home at 2 p.m. Sunday. Rev. V.V. Hackley conducted the service. Interment was made in the family lot in Lowell cemetery in charge of Undertakers Sheets and Son.
