The following information on school in Brunswick, Indiana, circa 1947, comes from former student David Burton:
- I attended the first grade in the one room school house located just north of the old Hudson dealership. I believe the year was 1947. Mrs Malacavitch was the teacher. The school had outside toilets located on either side of the property behind the school building. Drinking water was from a hand pump well. One bucket sat just inside the doorway; one dipper served everyone. The school was heated with a wood/coal stove. It's amazing that we children of that time were as healthy as we were!
The class was divided into two groups: one facing west, the other facing east. I'm not sure why, maybe one group was ahead of the other learning-wise. It was an honor to be picked to go to the Hudson dealership to get the teacher a coke, of which she drank many during the day!! Second and 3rd grades were at Lincoln school, Cedar Lake. 4th and 5th grades were at Shiller school. Mr. Star was the 5th grade teacher, and I think the 4th grade teacher was Mrs. Lauter or something like that. Sixth, 7th and 8th grades were back at Lincoln.
