Harold L. Strickland
- Harold L. Strickland, age 74, 12104 Belshaw Rd., Lowell, died Sat., Nov. 14, in Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in Dyer following a brief illness. A former Superior Court Judge, Strickland presided in Hommond's Court Room 5 fo 30 years before his retirement in 1963. Mr. Strickland was graduated from Valparaiso University's law school in 1926. He practed law in Hammond for six years before entering politics. The jurist lived at 7128 Olcott in Hammond until 1943, when he moved with his family to a 108 acre farm in Lowell. He won a reputation of being equally at home on the bench or in the seat of a saddle. Mr. Strickland's career as a judge began in 1933 when Gov. Paul V. McNutt appointed him to fill a vacancy created by the death of Judge Clyde Cleveland. He has been elected to the state senate in 1932. Masonic services were held at the funeral home. Mr. Strickland was past master of Colfax Lodge No. 378 and the Lowell Eastern Star chapter. He was a 33rd degree Mason and past potentate of Hammond's Orak Shrine Temple. Mr. Strickland was a World War I veteran and a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Lowell Methodist Church and served as a board member of the Gary Methodist Hospital for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Grace; one son, Richard of Lowell; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Sue Bratton of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren; one brother, Frank Strickland of Lowell; and one sister, Mrs. Velda Ross of Lowell. Funeral services were held Mon., Nov. 16, in Lowell at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Stanley Rolston officiating. Burial was made in the West Creek Cemetery, Lowell.
