    Six Boys Enlist

    Six fellows missed about town and home this week include Duane Ashton, who left Monday for Great Lakes, where he will take his boot training in the U.S. Navy.

    Robert Blair, Paul Martin, Ralph Barker, William Joyce and Russell Tuttle enlisted in the air force.

    The boys went to Indianapolis on Friday and were sent to Sampson Air Force Base at Geneva, New York, for basic training.

    News of Last Week's Enlistees

    Letters from the five fellows who enlisted in the air force a week ago Friday tell of their arrival at Sampson Air Force Base, Geneva, N.Y. Bob Blair writes his folks, the Lawrence Millers, that the day's time -- 4:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. -- is consumed with daily washing, ironing, bed making and afternoon classes. 9 p.m. marks bedtime. Bob's address is Pvt. Robert V. Blair, A.F. 16388234, 3664 Trng. Sqd., Flight 863, Sampson A.F.B., Geneva, N.Y.

    We also received Bill Joyce's address: Pvt. William H. Joyce Jr., A.F. 16388240, 3664 Trng. Sqd., Flt. 863, Sampson A.F.B., Geneva, N.Y.

    And that of Pvt. Ralph E. Barker, A.F. 16388235, 3664 Trg. Sqd., Flt. 863, Sampson A.F.B., Genva, N.Y.

    Paul Martin and Russell Tuttle, who conclude the group, are stationed at Sampson A.F.B. also.

    Duane Ashton, who enlisted in the navy, is stationed at Great Lakes.


The following November 1, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
    Russell Tuttle, Paul Martin, Ralph Barker, Robert Blair and William Joyce, who have completed five weeks of their basic training at Sampson Air Base, Geneva, N.Y., enjoyed a gala weekend with home folks who went to New York to see them. Mr. and Mrs. Ike Tuttle and daughter, Marjorie, Mrs. John B. Martin, Mrs. B.M. Barker and daughter, Lavonne, left Friday morning and picked the boys up at the base where they were joined by Mrs. Martin's daughter and her husband, T/Sgt. G.L. Mackey, who is ROTC instructor at the University of Maryland, and all enjoyed an overnight stay in Rochester and a trip into Canada on Sunday.

The following January 3, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 4:
    Bill Joyce of the Air Force enjoyed the Christmas holidays at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Joyce. Bill recently completed his basic training at Sampson Air Force base, Geneva, N.Y., and has been transferred to dental assistant school. Address: Pfc. William H. Joyce, Jr. AF16388240, 3625 Medical Group, Tyndall AFB, Florida.

The following May 15, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 5:
    William "Bill" Joyce arrived at the Chicago airport on Mother's Day, where he was greeted by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Joyce, and accompanied them to Waukegan, Ill., where they attended an open house which honored Mrs. Joyce's father, Dr. W.A. Pitt, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Bill, who has been stationed in Florida, will report on May 29 at Columbus Air Force base in Mississippi where he will receive Air Cadet training.

This June 5, 1952, Lowell Tribune artilce was found on page 2, column 4:
    In a letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Joyce, Bill tells of the pre-flight training course in which he has been enrolled and also sends the following new address for his Tribune: A/C W.H. Joyce, Jr., AD16388240, 3301 Training Sq., Class 53-D-11, Columbus A.F.B., Columbus, Mississippi.

The following December 18, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 2:
    Air Cadet William H. Joyce, Jr., successfully completed courses at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, Saturday and arrived home last night to enjoy the holidays with his parents.

The following 1955 newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    Promoted to 1st Lieutenant

    William H. Joyce, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Joyce of North Clark street, who is a jet pilot (T-33) instructor, was commissioned a First Lieutenant last week. The good news reached him while at home on Christmas leave.

    "Bill" enlisted in the Air Corps in 1952. His address is: Lt. W. H. Joyce Jr., 3561 Pit. Tng. Sq., Sec. 3, Webb AFB, and Big Springs, Tex.


The following newspaper article, hand-identified as coming from the Aug. 16, 1956, Tribune, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    Home on Leave

    Lt. William H. Joyce, of the U.S. Air Force, is home on leave from Webb Air Base, Big Springs, Texas. He is the guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Joyce of North Clark street. Bill will return to his base August 25th, where, as assistant squadron commander, he gives jet pilot students their final flying tests.
