Walter Cleaver (1850-1924)

Walter Cleaver (1850-1924)

The following unidentified newspaper article was one of several in a collection of Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Walter, son of Walter, Sr., and Lucinda Hayden Cleaver, was born in Kankakee Co., Illinois, January 29, 1850, having attained the age of 74 years, 3 months and 10 days.

On August 18, 1872, he was united in marriage to Cornelia Caroline Sanders. To this union was born his only child. Mrs. Cornelia Cleaver preceded him February 20, 1875.

On April 9*, 1878, he was married to Mrs.* Alice Hayhurst, who passed away October 24, 1898. His third marriage occurred on January 29, 1902, to Laura A. Shirley Nichols, who survives him.

Although a member of no church he attended both the Christian and Methodist churches and believed in the value of church membership as a soul saving institution. He was a man of sterling character, given to no bad habits and not given to profanity. He bore his thirty years of failing health patiently, succumbing at last, after a week's illness, to pneumonia. Mrs. Cleaver is a member of the Lowell Church of Christ.

He leaves to mourn his departure, one son, Charles Cleaver; one grandson, Carrol Eugene Cleaver; five step-children, Mrs. Ethel Mason, Mrs. W.J. McCain, Mrs. G.B. Craft, Mrs. J.B. Harrington and J.B. Nichols; seven* step-grand-children, Richard McCain, Lila McCain, Burton Harrington, Mildred Harrington, Howard Craft, and Myrtle Nichols. One half-sister, Mrs. Charles Belshaw, and two half-brothers, Henry and Mahlon Hathaway.

Funeral services and interment at Sherburnville Church of Christ and cemetery. Sermon by Rev. Fred Gibson, of Lowell Church of Christ.

* NOTES -- Although "Mrs. Alice Hayhurst" was listed as his second wife, the obituary of Alice Hayhurst Cleaver indicates that her maiden name was "Hayhurst." Their marriage date was listed as Apr. 9 here, but in her obituary, it was listed as Apr. 10. Also, this obituary stated that Walter Cleaver left seven step-grandchildren, but only six were listed.
