Mahlon Hathaway (1856-1934)

Thsi Feb. 1, 1934, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 6, column 4:
    Mahlon Hathaway, son of Bethuel and Lucinda Hathaway, was born in Kankakee county, Ill., November 17, 1856. He departed this life January 22*, 1934, aged 77 years, 2 months, 5 days. On January 2, 1881, he was united in marriage to Julia A Smith, and to this union three children were born: Edna, who is deceased; Miss Blanche and Mrs. Carrie Ayers, of Roanoke. Their mother having passed on May 5, 1887. Then on March 18, 1890, Mr. Hathaway was united in marriage to Barbara Grimes, and to this union four children were born: Leslie and Lucile, who are deceased; Mrs. Gladys Rinchen, of Roanoke; and Archie, of Hickville, O. He also leaves one brother, Henry Hathaway, of Lowell, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Belshaw, of Crown Point, Ind. He had three half-brothers, David, Daniel and Walter, who are deceased. He also leaves nine grand children and a host of other relatives and friends.

    Some fifty years ago Mr. Hathaway united with the Methodist church of West Creek, and has always lived true to his experience.

    Funeral services were held January 25th at the Roanoke M.E. church, Rev. D.C. Souder officiating. Burial in I.O.O.F. cemetery at Roanoke.

    Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Belshaw, Clayton Belshaw and Mrs. Merle Kellogg, of Crown Point; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hathaway, Mrs. Abbie Dahl, Mrs. Ethel Wason, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Swanson, of Lowell; Mrs. Harold L. Strickland, of Hammond; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Strickland, and Mrs. Fred Buse, of East Chicago; Mrs. Eva Conrad, of DeMotte; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hale, of Martinton, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Ayers, of Gary; Rev. and Mrs. C.E. Smith, of DeSota, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bickel, of Bippens, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. John Carstens and daughter, Hilda, and Mr. and Mrs. Otto Clawson, of Fort Wayne; Alva Hayden, of South Whitley, Ind.

* NOTE -- This obituary lists Mahlon Hathaway's date of death as Jan. 22, 1934, but the Hayden Family reunion records list it as Jan. 23 of that year.
