The following undated, unidentified newspaper article was found in a copy of Helen Craft's Scrapbook at the Lowell Public Library:

SURPRISE - MYERS
In Lowell, Dec. 25, at the home of the groom's parents, by Elder John Bruce, Clarence Surprise, of Lowell, Ind., to Ida A. Myers, of Allegan, Mich. Clarence is well and favorably known here and is one of Lowell's most promising and enterprising young men, and the bride of his choice from Mich. is a most estimable young lady. They will make their home on the farm known as the old home stead. That the choicest blessing of providence be theirs in their wedded life is the wish of their many friends.The following information comes from the Surprise family CD-Rom created by Janet Umlauf:
- Clarence SURPRISE was born on 30 Sep 1870 in Lowell, IN. Clarence has a furniture store up in Allegan, MI. Kenneth [Surprise] went up to work and that is how he met Ida Carlson.
The following January 17, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 4:
- Lowell relatives were informed via telegram, Wednesday, of the death of Clarence Surprise, 79, who died at his home in Allegan, Mich. Funeral services will be held at the Gordon funeral home in that city at 2:00 p.m., Saturday. Born and reared in Lowell, Clarence was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Surprise, pioneer settlers of Lowell. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lovisa Love Jones and Mrs. Ella Robinson of Lowell and Mrs. Hermie Thompson of New York; also, two brothers, Ernest A. of Lowell and Charles L. of Hammond.
The following January 24, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found in Section 2 on page 3:
HOLD LAST RITES FOR CLARENCE SURPRISE
Funeral services for Clarence S. Surprise, 81, were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, at the Gorden funeral home in Allegan, Michigan. He had become quite ill after a fall on the ice about January 1.Born and reared in Lowell, Mr. Surprise had spent the past 40 years in Allegan where he operated a grocery store and later a furniture exchange.
September 30, 1870, dates his birth to the late Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Surprise, who were pioneer residents of Lowell.
Since the death of his wife in 1919, Clarence made his home with his only son, Thomas and family. Two daughters preceded him in death.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Lovisa L. Jones and Mrs. Ella Robinson of Lowell, and Mrs. Hermie Thompson of Long Island, N.Y.; two brothers, Ernest A. Surprise of Lowell and Charles L. of Hammond, besides many nieces and nephews.
Lowell relatives who attended funeral services included Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Surprise, Mrs. Lovisa Jones, Mrs. Ella Robinson, Mrs. Kenneth Surprise and Robert Surprise.
