Loyal William "Bill" Combs, Sr. (1882-1957)

A copy of the following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    Heart Attack Fatal to L.W. Combs, 74

    Loyal William Combs Sr., 74 died unexpectedly at Elkhart, Ind., Saturday, January 19, following a heart attack.

    Mr. Combs was engaged in saleswork. In earlier years he was an auctioneer. The Combs family came to Lowell from Hammond in 1932.

    The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James A. Combs, "Bill" was born in Hamilton County, Ind., Nov 23, 1882. He married Vella Ulrey, who passed away in 1947. A son, Gerald, died in 1939.

    He is survived by four sons, James, a lumber dealer in Momence, Ill., Ralph, postmaster at Cedar Lake. Tom, a teacher at Kouts, and Dr. Loyal William, director of student health at Purdue University in West Lafayette, three daughters, Mrs. Leona Perry of West Lafayette, Mrs. Edna Duelio of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Vella (Toots) Street of Newport, N.C.; a brother, Joseph Combs of Conneaut, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Allie Mitchner of Frankfort, Ind., besides other relatives and friends.

    Memorial services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in the Eskridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Claude Eaton, pastor of the Lowell First Methodist church officiating. Interment was in the Lowell cemetery beside his wife.
