    RETIRED FARMER, 81, DIES IN LOWELL HOME

    Services for Llewellyn Smith In Chapel Sunday Afternoon

    Long illness closed Friday for Llewellyn Smith, 81, whose passing occurred at his home in Lowell. A retired farmer, he had lived in Lake County virtually all of his life.

    With his wife, Kitty, he leaves a son, Neal, and three daughters, Mrs. Fred Minninger of Lowell, Mrs. Walter Tittle of Gary and Mrs. John Watson of Cincinnati. A brother, Harry, also survives with four grandchildren.

    Rev. Harold Hotchkiss of Lowell Methodist Church conducted services at the Weaver chapel at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Lowell cemetery is the place of burial.

    Death Claims Lewellyn Smith, Longtime Resident

    Death came Friday, April 30, to Lewellyn Smith, 81, after weeks of illness had confined him to his home on West Commercial Avenue.

    Mr. Smith moved his family to Lowell in 1919 from the Sherburnville community, eight miles west of Lowell, where he was born July 20, 1872.

    He was the son of Elizabeth and Jackson Smith, his mother being one of the children of Nehemiah and Harriet Hayden, esteemed early pioneers of this region. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Smith farmed.

    On February 19, 1895, he was married to Kittie Krauthammer, and they were the parents of a son and four daughters; Neil and Vera (Mrs. Fred Minninger) of Lowell; Dorothy (Mrs. Rupert Grischke*), who passed away Jan 30, 1938; Pauline (Mrs. John Watson) of Cincinnati; and Neva (Mrs. Walter Tittle) of Ogden Dunes, Gary.

    The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in February 1945.

    Survived by his wife and four children, he also leaves four grandchildren; Sue Minninger of Lowell; Thomas, William and Daniel Tittle of Ogden Dunes; beside one brother, Harry of Chicago, other area relatives and a host of friends.

    Memorial services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Weaver funeral home with the Rev Harold Hotchkiss, pastor of the First Methodist church officiating. Interment was in the Lowell cemetery.

* NOTE -- The married name of Dorothy, the daughter of Lewellyn Smith, is "Grischke" in this artilce, but appears as both "Grischke" and as "Gerischke" in the Hayden family papers.
