"ARCH" NICHOLS DIES IN KANSAS
FORMER LOWELL MAN PASSES AWAY AT HIS HOME IN KANSAS
- The funeral services of A.W. Nichols, who passed away Monday evening at his home this city after a lingering illness, chiefly the infirmities of old age, were conducted Wednesday afternoon by Rev. Gilbert A. Cody, at the M.E. church. The services were under the auspices of A.F. and A.M. lodge of this city, of which he had long been a member.
- Interment in Oak Valley cemetery, beside the remains of his wife and daughter.
- Many beautiful flowers paid tribute to the excellent life he had lived, and told in the language of the flowers, the esteem in which he was held by those who knew him best.
- Archibald William Nichols was born July 10, 1848 at Lowell, Ind., and on February 8, 1864, at the age of 15 he enlisted in the U.S. army with the Fifth Indiana Cavalry, Company I; was taken prisoner July 30, 1864, and confined in the Andersonville, Charleston and Florence military prisons until February 28, 1865. He received his discharge September 15, 1865.
- He was married November 25, 1867 to Hannah J. Levering at Crown Point, Ind. One year after marriage they moved west, locating on a farm near Longton, later moving to Longton, where he engaged in the hardware and undertaking business. To this union three children were born--Manty, who died when six years of age, Adella Crumrine, of Longton, and Abram J. Nichols, of Wichita. One brother, B.S. Nichols, of Wichita, two grand daughters, Neva Morgridge and Opal Nichols, one great-grand-daughter also survive, and he leaves a host of kind neighbors and loving friends.
- Since the passing of his beloved wife, August 12, 1921, Mr. Nichols has been gradually failing in health and for the past few months, and during his recent days of illness, he has repeatedly expressed the wish to join his loved ones. He passed away at 8:30 Monday evening, and had he lived until Saturday of this week he would have been 78 years of age.
- He and his wife united with the M.E. church at Parvin, Oklahoma, where his membership still stands. He was a member of the G.A.R., the Order of the Eastern Star, and of the Masonic Lodge of Longton. -- Longton, Kansas News, July 8th.
- "Arch" was well known to our older people, and he made many visits to his old home in Indiana. He was an uncle, of Wheeler Nichols, Huron Nichols, Miss Sadie Nichols and Mrs. E.H. Ruge, of Lowell. His many friends will regret to hear of his death.
