The following article was found in the February 10, 1944, Lowell Tribune on page 2, column 1:
- Bruce King, son of Mrs. Mildred King, Tampa, Fla., and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Surprise, who has been on active duty in the South Pacific for the last four months, was recently advanced from Corporal to Sergeant. Now a machine gunner in the marines, Sgt. King previously spent a year and a half as an instructor in the barrage balloon corps at Parris Island, S. C., and New River, N. C. He enlisted in the marines over two years ago.

Enroute Home from California
Sgt. Bruce King, son of Mrs. Mildred King, Tampa, Fla., and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Surprise, Lowell, arrived here Monday morning enroute to his home at Tampa. Bruce, who was just released from a hospital in California a few days ago, plans to visit relatives here and in Chicago before going home. For participation in battles on Bougainville in the Solomons, and on Guam, where he was in the second wave of marines to go ashore, Bruce wears two campaign stars on his overseas service ribbon.
