DEATH OF DR. HENRY PETTIBONE
Passed Away at Augustana Hospital, Chicago, at Noon on June 26th
It is our sad duty this week to announce the death of our friend and townsmen, DR. HENRY PETTIBONE, who passed away on Thursday of last week, eight days after a cruel operation had been performed to save his life. Knowing all he did that the surgeon's knife was all that could save him he went there for heroic treatment, hoping that he might be spared to come back to his family and beautiful home which is now in mourning, and the family chain broken.
Up to Wednesday morning his chances seemed bright for recovery, but soon after internal hemorrhages began, and on Thursday morning his family and the physicians were only hoping against hope, and at noon the end came after hours of intense suffering, with all his family at his bedside, and thus one in the prime of life, whose ancestors on both sides lived to be very old, has left us, seemingly before his errand on earth was complete. He is the third Dr. Pettibone to die in Crown Point. The grandfather came here from the state of New York in 1860, and died in May 1881, at the age of ninety years. The father, Dr. Harvey Pettibone, became a resident of Crown Point in 1847 when he began the practice of medicine at this place, and died four years ago after living beyond his allotted time.
DR. HENRY PETTIBONE, was born in Crown Point, May 31st, 1850, and after attending the schools of Crown Point entered the sophomore class of Hanover College in 1869, remaining three years, and graduated in the Scientific class in 1872. He then followed teaching for two years and studied medicine with his father, and in 1874 entered Rush Medical College, at Chicago, where he remained two terms and graduated among the first of his class in 1876. At this time he began practicing with his father, and in a few years he took the entire work on himself.
On June 4th, 1878, he was married to Miss Margaret T. Sauerman, of this place and to them two daughters, Anna Pauline and Edith E., were born, and are spared to comfort their mother, Anna Pauline now being the wife of Mr. George H. Jones, of Chicago.
The mother of Mr. Pettibone is still living and enjoying good health.
The funeral at the home at two o'clock Sunday afternoon was attended by a very large crowd of sympathizing friends and a consoling sermon was preached by Rev. Dr. Hearst.
Notwithstanding the heavy clouds and threatening weather, the home was packed before the time of service and besides the large yard and street, and the walk on the opposite side were lined with friends of the deceased who came to pay respects. A number from Hammond were present and a long line of K.P's from Lowell were in line, and the Foresters and K.P's in the march to the cemetery numbered 300. A downpour of rain fell at the cemetery during the short prayers and the singing by the male quartet.
Dr. Harvey Pettibone died in Aug. 1898, David K. Pettibone, the eldest brother passed away in a few months. A short time afterwards, William, the next oldest brother died and lastly, DR. HENRY, all inside of four years.
