The Lowell Star, Aug. 17, 1872, page 5, column 3, had a list of soldiers who were supporters of Grant in that election. Among them was E.J. Evans of the 73rd Ind.. This may or may not have been the same person as the E.L. Evans mentioned on the monument. (Note the different middle initial of the two.)
