Old Resident Passes Away
Elijah S. Clark who has been in failing health for several weeks passed away at his home Sunday afternoon. He was past 90 years of age. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church yesterday at 2 p.m. Full obituary next week.Another brief item appeared in column 5 on the same page of the paper:
- Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Filsinger, of Alda, Nebr., came Monday evening, being called here on account of the death of her father, E.S. Clark.
The following item was in the April 1, 1920, Lowell Tribune (page 1, column 3):
- Elijah S. Clark, third child of Joseph A. and Harriet (Story) Clark, was born in Ontario county, N.Y., September 1, 1829. He died at his home in Lowell March 21, 1920, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 17 days. He came in Lake county with his parents in 1836, and has since resided here. He was united in marriage to Malissa Robbins September 2, 1869. To this union three children were born: Mary, wife of A.J. Filsinger, of Alda, Nebr.; Mrs. Sarah Newkirk, of Lowell; and one dying in infancy.
Mr. Clark was one of our most highly respected citizens. He was a man who bore the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was one of the organizers of the Lake county Mutual Insurance Co., and was its first president. He served as town trustee for two terms and it was during his administration that the water works were put in. During the war Mr. Clark was appointed a Provost Marshal and did much good service for his country in attending to the duties of that important office.
Mr. Clark came to Lake County when there were few settlers and went through the many hardships incident to pioneer life. He remained on the farm until a few years ago, when he moved to Lowell where he made his home until his death.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Wednesday at 2 p.m. and there was a large attendance of his old friends and neighbors. Rev. C.A. Brown, pastor of the church, preached the funeral sermon. Mr. Clark was member of Colfax Masonic lodge of Lowell and they had charge of the funeral service. Interment was made in the Lowell cemetery. Undertaker William Sheets had charge of the burial service.
