In the 1937 Lowellian, Emerson Phebus was listed as one of the freshman boys involved in sports (page 54) and as a participant in Mr. Floyd's wrestling and boxing matches put on for the school open house on Feb. 25, 1937 (page 81). He was also on the basketball squad (page 86). The 1938 Lowellian also mentioned that he excelled at sports (page 53), and in 1939 he was listed as one of the "leading boy athletes" (page 67). In the "Senior Will" section of the 1939 Lowellian another boy wrote, "I, Julius Pattee, will my naturaly wavy black hair to Emerson Phebus." (page 41)
In his senior year Emerson Phebus's senior will entry (page 69) in the 1940 Lowellian stated "I, Emerson Phebus, will to Harold Wietbrock my numerous recitations in all classes." Another section of the 1940 yearbook, listing impossibilities, suggested that "Emerson Phebus looking cheerful" would never happen. On a more serious note, he was president of the Ag club in the 1939/40 school year, and an entry on page 102 stated: "A team composed of Vernon Childress, Emerson Phebus, Leopold Kalvairis, and Archie Huebsch won fifth at the Indiana Muck Crop Show. Emerson Phebus also carried off third honors at the district Corn Husking Contest."
