A copy of the following newspaper article, hand-identified as coming from the November 22, 1934, Lowell Tribune, was found in the Lowell Public Library's clipping files:

    HERMAN MILLER KILLED ON ROAD SUNDAY NIGHT

    WAS ON HIS WAY HOME WHEN STRUCK BY CAR NEAR COOK, NECK BROKEN

    Herman Miller, living at Brunswick, was hit by a car while on his way home Sunday night about 5:30 and killed instantly. His neck was broken and his skull was fractured by the impact.

    Mr. Miller had been in Lowell that day and had taken dinner with his brother, John, and wife, from whom we got the following information concerning the accident. John started home with him and his brother stopped at the home of their sister, Mrs. Adam Schafer, where he stayed for supper. After supper he started to walk home, going west on the stone road west from Cook, and while walking along the road he was hit by a car.

    The driver of the car did not stop that any one seen, but neighbors noticed a car drive past several times and finally concluded that something must be wrong and concluded to investigate, and found the body of Mr. Miller. This was some time after the accident.

    John Miller was called as soon as possible and went to the home of his sister where the matter was discussed but still no clue was found as to who struck Miller.

    Otto Kurack*, mail carrier at Cedar Lake, was in the Schafer restaurant while the conversation was going on but made no response. Later he left the place with a young lady who worked at the restaurant and stayed at the Kurack home. He told the girl that his car was the one that struck Mr. Miller. That girl had him go back to the restaurant, where he told John Miller about the accident. Mr. Miller and Mr. Kurack immediately went to the Sheriff's office at Crown Point, where Kurack informed the sheriff what had happened. He said the reason he had said nothing was that he lost his head after the accident.

    Mr. Kurack is being held under bonds until after the Coroner's request is held. Deputy Coroner Franklin Petry expects to hold the inquest next Monday.

    Funeral services were held at the Lowell, M.E. church yesterday.

* NOTE -- Otto Kurack's name was spelled "Kurach" in a later story about this incident.
