OTTO KURACH IS HELD TO THE GRAND JURY
DEPUTY CORONER FRANKLIN PETRY HOLDS INQUEST IN MILLER DEATH
Dr. Franklin Petry, Deputy Coroner for the south end of the county held an inquest Monday to inquire into the death of Herman Miller, who was killed by being hit by a car two weeks ago last Sunday night.After taking the evidence of witnesses in the vicinity of where the accident occurred, the Deputy Coroner rendered a verdict that Mr. Miller came to his death by being hit by a car driven by Otto Kurach, a mail carrier at Cedar Lake. The Deputy Coroner found that after the accident Mr. Kurach had left the scene and did not report the accident until about four hours afterwards. Deputy Coroner Petry bound Mr. Kurach over to the grand jury for investigation. His case will come up the next session of the grand jury.
In giving his evidence, Mr. Kurach said that he stopped after he hit Mr. Miller and on examination found that he was dead, and after that he was so badly scared that he did not report the accident until he was advised to do so and give himself up to the Sheriff.
It was proven at the inquest that it was a bad rainy night and that at the time of the accident Mr. Miller was on the wrong side of the road. The worst thing that Mr. Kurach has to overcome, in case the grand jury returns an indictment against him, is that he left the scene of the accident and did not report it until four hours later.
