The following January 11, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 7, column 3:

    MILITARY PROBLEM STIKES LOWELL HIGH

    The military problem is striking at the boys in Lowell High. The boys are enlisting in all branches of the armed service. Richard Burgess, a would-be senior, is in the Marines.

    Duane Ashton, Art Kasparian and Herman Allie have enlisted in the Navy, but have deferments until the end of this school year.

    Alva Peffley has enlisted in the army. Mr. Adams, our science teacher, has enlisted in the Air Force. John D Strickhorn has enlisted in the Navy. These are a few of the enlistments.

    The boys have been enlisting to avoid the draft law.

    Many other boys are considering enlisting so they can choose their preferred branch of service.

The following information comes from a February 7, 1952, Lowell Tribune article found on page 2, column 2:
    The Allie's son, Herman, who enlisted in the Navy, began his recruit training at Great Lakes January 8th. Herman graduated from L.H.S. last spring.
This July 3, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 4:

    Completes Boot Training

    Herman Allie, Jr., L.H.S. graduate, class of '51, completed boot training at Great Lakes and a 30-day continued assignment. On June 16th, he was one of 50 fellows to be flown to San Francisco, Calif. He is now at Treasure Island awaiting the arrival of his ship. Herman tells us the weather is very chilly. Address: S.A. The following July 31, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 1:
    News comes from Herman Allie, Jr., telling of his trip to Japan via the U.S.S. troopship, Bietner, which docked on July 10. His first encampment, high up in the hills, was a settlement of net covered tents, to protect the men from malaria bugs. Although he was in Japan only five days, Herman reveals that the weather was terribly hot but the countryside was very pretty. He boarded the U.S.S. Novasata on July 15th and set sail for Arabia, Korea, and China. It will be some time before he returns to the states and he will enjoy hearing from Lowell friends. Address: SA Herman T. A November 27, 1952, Lowell Tribune article on page 1, column 6, mentioned that Herman Allie was home from service for Thanksgiving.
