Horatio James Nichols (1841-1898)

The following unidentified newspaper article was in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
HORATIO J. NICHOLS was born in Lowell, Indiana, January 4, 1841. At this early day things about here were new and primitive; here he was raised, attended school in winter and worked on [the] farm in summer. March 23, 1861*, Mr. Nichols was united in marriage to Sarah E. Wheeler. To this union ten children were born, four sons and six daughters, four having been taken away by death. Edna and Jessie passed away after they had grown up into womanhood. Albert was killed by lightning. They are all lovingly and mournfully remembered.

Mr. Nichols was an active and energetic business man. For many years he was a buyer of live stock. No man was better known by this farming community at large than the departed, and he will be greatly missed by this class. Through his severe application to business, and frequent exposures in the pursuit of his business, with the added trials of sudden and painful bereavements of losing dear children by death, his once strong constitution gave away; at last organic brain disease clouded his mind. The 2nd of this month the departed was taken to the asylum at Logansporte, this state, where he died September 12, 1898, at the age of 57 years, 9 months and 8 days. He leaves a wife, thee sons, three daughters, grand-children and many friends to mourn his departure.

The remains were brought home. The funeral services, conducted by Elder J. Bruce, were held at the family residence, of this place, September 14th. A large concourse of neighbors and friends gathered to sympathize with the bereaved and to give their beloved dead a respectful burial

* NOTE -- Although this article lists the marriage year of Horatio and Sarah Nichols as 1861, a "Pioneer History" column lists it as 1862.
