John Bernard "Bernie" Nichols (1881-1956)

The following Sept. 20, 1956, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1 column 3:

    Bernard Nichols, 75, Lifelong Resident Here Dies of Heart Attack

    John Bernard Nichols, 75, succumbed to a heart attack early Sunday morning, Sept. 16, at his home east of Lowell.

    "Bernie" had transacted business in Lowell on Saturday and Saturday and was feeling fine. He became ill Saturday evening. He previously had suffered a heart attack.

    Widely known in this area, Mr. Nichols farmed in Eagle Creek township. He had been affiliated with the Masonic Colfax lodge since 1926 and was an active member for many years.

    He was born in Lowell June 24, 1881, the son of Walter Scott and Mary Elizabeth (Dinwiddie) Nichols. On December 25, 1903 he was married to Margaret Jane Turner and they were the parents of five children, Mary Story of Dyer, Florence Nichols of Fort Wayne, Milford of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Mable Reeves and Bernard, Jr. both of Lowell.

    His entire life was spent in the vicinity of Lowell with the exception of three and one-half years when he moved his family to Gillette, Wyoming.

    Surviving with his wife, Margaret Jane, known to friends and family as "Jennie," are their five children; one brother, Harry of Crown Point; one half sister, Lolita Wendel of Lowell; one half brother, Leonard Nichols of Lowell; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends.

    Rev. E.L. Worley officiated at memorial services conducted at 2 p.m., September 18, in the Eskridge Funeral Home. Interment was made in the Lowell cemetery.
