John M. Brooks (1841-1917)
A Pioneer Called Home
John M. Brooks, one of the pioneer settlers of Yellowhead township, passed away at St James hospital, in Chicago Heights, on Sunday morning, August 19th, at 1:30 o'clock, at the age of 76 years, 6 months and one day.Although the condition of his health was not of the best, he was able to be out as usual until last Thursday, so that his death was unexpected and a shock to all. Mr. Brooks had been a sufferer from hernia for some time, and last Thursday was taken seriously ill and that evening was taken to the hospital where he submitted to an operation. The operation was successful but in his weakened condition he fell a victim to pneumonia, and passed away early Sunday morning.
The deceased was born on a farm near Hebron, Indiana, on February 18, 1841, being the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cooper Brooks. His wife preceded him to the Better Land on January 11, 1912. Since then he has made his home with his children.
Mr. Brooks was a quiet, unassuming man, always in his place at church when possible, and living the life of a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He gave his heart to his Savior in early boyhood and for more than fifty years followed in His footsteps. His children, four daughters who mourn the loss of a devoted father, are: Mrs. Wm. R. Miller and Mrs. George Mumm, of Sherburnville; Mrs. Charles Collins, of Lowell, Ind.; and Mrs. George Myers of Harvey, Ill. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Sarah Cole, of Long Beach, California; six grand children and six great-grand children.
