The following November 9, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Training at Great Lakes
Joseph L. Fleener, 18, Lowell, is receiving his initial naval indoctrination at the U.S. naval training center, Great Lakes, Ill.His recruit training consists of instruction in seamanship, military drill, etc. During this period a series of aptitude tests will be taken by each trainee to determine whether he will be assigned to a naval service school or to immediate duty at sea.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the January 18, 1945, issue (page 7, column 2):
- Joseph Fleener is home on leave following completion of "boot" training. He will return to Great Lakes soon to await transportation to be schooled for boatswain's duty.
This May 17, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- Joseph Fleener, S 1/c, has returned to Little Creek, Va., where he is stationed, after spending a 15-day leave here with his mother, Mrs. Emma Fleener, and brothers and sisters.
This September 13, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- Charlston, S.C., Aug. 31 -- Seaman First Class Joseph L. Fleener, USNR, 18, son of Mrs. E. Fleener of Lowell, Ind., is now on duty aboard the USS LSM 413, which was constructed at the Charleston Navy Yard and commissioned there Tuesday, August 28.
- Capt. Guy E. Baker, USN, Captain of the Yard, placed the new landing ship medium in commission and Lt. John Marshall Hayes, USNR, of Chicago, Ill., assumed command.
- Fleener, who attended Lowell District high school, was employed at Manufacturers' Specialty Co., Lowell before entering the navy in August, 1944. His brother, T.C. Fleener, is a Gunner's Mate 3/c, serving on the USS Boulder Victory.
