Margaret Grimes Spalding (1848-1930)

Margaret Grimes Spalding (1848-1930)
(Mrs. James Spalding)

A copy of the following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Margaret (Grimes) Spalding, eldest daughter of Hiram and Barbara Grimes, was born near Sherburnville, Ill., September 14, 1848, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ray Hale, of Grant Park, Ill., June 24, 1930, at the age of 81 years, 9 months, and 10 days.

She was united in marriage to James Spading, November 21, 1867. To this union nine children were born -- two dying in infancy and four in young womanhood. Mr. Spalding passed away in 1914. Of the immediate family, one son, Frank Spalding, of Franklin Park, Ill., and two daughters, Grace Nicholson, of Gary and Lulu Hale, of Grant Park, Ill., three grandchildren, Wayne Spalding of Goodwell, Oklahoma, Margaret Hale, and Phyllis Nicholson; three sisters, Mrs. Mahlon Hathaway of Roanoke, Ind., Mrs. William Hewitt, of Rosemae, Canada, and Mrs. Mary Rohr, of Chicago, and numerous other relatives and friends remain to mourn her passing.

When a young woman she united with the Grant Park M.E. Church. All her life she felt a keen interest in religious work. In later years the radio sermon was her comfort and inspiration.

Funeral services were held at the Weaver and Son funeral home Saturday afternoon. Dr. Roe, of Momence, conducted the services. Interment was made in the family lot in Lowell cemetery in charge of Weaver and Son.
