The following June 2, 1921, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 6:
A Birthday Surprise
Monday being the birthday anniversary of Mrs. Maria Childers, her friends and relative[s] planned a surprise which was complete. A sumptuous luncheon of strawberry shortcake with whipped cream, sandwiches, cake and lemonade. The guests departed wishing Mrs. Childers many more happy birthdays. Those present were: Messrs and Mesdames Ed Hoevet, Andrew Childers and Carstens, Cyril Childers, Milo Brannon and families; Mesdames Lizzie Childers, Lizzie Rudolph, Sarah Jane Bowman, Dora Loyd, and daughter Iretta.The following unidentified newspaper articles, hand-dated 1935, were found in a scrapbook owned by Harriet Hoevet Bennett:
- Marie E. (Hoevet) Childers was born near Grant Park, Ill., May 30, 1888. Her death came after months of intense suffering, and she passed away at her home in Lowell, November 6, 1935, at the age of 47 years.
She was united in marriage to Milford Childers, March 3, 1909. To this union eight children were born: Wilford, of Lafayette; Chris, who passed away at the age of six years; Elaine, now Mrs. Dodson, of Peoria, Ill., and Eloise, Fondalie, Dwight, Lolita and Nadine, at home.
Mrs. Childers untied with the church of Christ, Lowell, July 12, 1925, under the ministry of F.B. Nickerson.
Besides her husband Milford Childers and seven children, Mrs. Childers is survived by six brothers, two sisters and many other relatives, who with a large number of friends she has made in the community mourn her departure.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Christian church, J.E. Poer Minster. Interment in the Lowell cemetery in charge of Weaver & Son.
- The brothers and sisters from a distance who attended the funeral of Mrs. Marie Childers were: Albert Hoevet, Triumph, Minn; Herman Hoevet, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Hoevet, of Waterford, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wild, of Tenstrike, Minn. Also Mr. and Mrs. Alex Freemont and daughter, of Chicago. Mrs. Freemont is a niece at the deceased.
