The following newspaper article, hand-identified as being from the May 5, 1955, Tribune, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

Tragic Death of Margie Leach Grieves Community

A tragedy which occurred near Shelby Saturday saddened the Lowell-Shelby communities. Ill for the past year from serious neck and head injuries sustained in an auto accident, Marjorie Leach, 23, ended her life.

For the past two years she had been employed as a nurse's aid at Dyer hospital. Margie was graduated from Lowell high school with the class of 1949. Throughout her four years L.H.S. she belonged to the pep club, press club, Lowellette, and Lowellian staff, band, home economics club and was a distinguished student in her senior year. In her junior year she was voted "most popular girl in the class."

She was found dead behind the wheel of her 1955 model car with a gun in her hand. The gun belonged to the Myland family of Dyer with whom she roomed.

The daughter of the late Frank and Mable Leach, Marjorie Ruth lived with her aunt, Mrs. John Black at Shelby, for 12 years after the death of her parents. Also preceding her in death were two sisters who died in infancy and a brother, Frank, Jr., who died in the service of his country.

Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Burton, Lowell; Maxine Thompson, Lake Village; Mrs. Neva Rainwater, Cedar Lake; Phyllis Leach of Rensselaer; three brothers, Cline* of Crown Point, Alvin of Cedar Lake and Joseph of Lowell; also a stepmother, Elmira Leach of Cedar Lake, beside other relatives and many friends.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, April 26, at 2 p.m., in the Sheets Funeral Home with Rev. E.L. Worley officiating. Interment was in the Lowell cemetery.

* NOTE -- Although the article lists one of the Leach brother name as "Cline," other articles listed it as "Clive" or "Clyde."
