Norton J. Phillips (1829-1915)
The following unidentified newspaper article was in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
- Norton J. Phillips was born in Ontario, New York, August 26, 1829, and died at his home in Lowell, March 1, 1915, at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 5 days. He was united in marriage to Annis A. Fuller and to this union was born one child -- Mrs. W.C. Hale, who has cared for him since the death of her mother about nine years ago.
He came to Lake county from Michigan when he was about twenty-one years of age and followed the occupation of farming, later moving to Lowell, where he has since made his home.
When the country needed the services of her young men he enlisted in Co. A, 73rd Indiana Volunteers and he served his country well.
He was a man who had the esteem and friendship of all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, and will be missed by many outside his immediate family.
Funeral services were held at the house Wednesday, March 3, 1915, and were largely attended by friends and neighbors. Rev. V.B. Servies, pastor of the M.E. church, preached the funeral sermon.
He was a member of Colfax lodge F. & A.M., and members of that order turned out in a body to the funeral. Undertaker John Castle had charge of the burial service. Interment was made in the Lowell cemetery. To the sorrowing daughter we extend sincere sympathy in her hour of sorrow.
