This March 4, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 1:
- Paul Roberts, a senior at Indiana University this year, spent several days at home last week, reporting for duty with the air corps on Wednesday. While here with his parents, the V.K. Roberts, his brother, Victor John, and family, he was honored at several parties, which included a family gathering at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Clayton Randolph, and family.
Another article (page 2, column 1) of the same issue of the paper added the following:
Called for Duty as Air Cadet
Paul W. Roberts, who enlisted in the air corps as a reserve air cadet last August, received his call last week to report to duty and is now at Kiser Field, Biloxi, Miss., where he has started his training.This May 6, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- Aviation Cadet Paul Roberts is now taking training at Memphis State College, having been transferred there from Biloxi, Miss.
This February 10, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- A/C Paul Roberts has graduated from the pre-flight school at Houston, Texas, and in a letter to his parents, the V.K. Roberts, says he is now stationed at the base at Coleman, Texas, where he will take his primary training.

Transferred to New Field
A/C Paul W. Roberts, who was recently graduated from a basic training course at Curtis Field, Brady, Texas, has been transferred to Foster Field, Texas, for advanced training.The following Sept. 14, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 3 column 1:
Many Men Trained at Fost Field
Foster Field, Texas -- Just as the flow of steel products and other war materials steadily roll from its production lines, Indiana tallied another mark in the battle effort ledger Sept. 8th, when it was represented in the 31st class of fighter pilots to be graduated from Foster Field for the Army Air Forces.The Hoosier state has had 210 of its sons enter this AAF base for pilot instruction and with that figure, ranks ninth in state representation since the field started training in the fall of 1941.
Among the Indiana men graduated as fighter pilots from this field is Paul W. Roberts, 22, son of Atty, and Mrs. Victor K. Roberts. He received his A.B. degree at Indiana University. His wife is the former Catherine Collins, Newburgh, Ind.
It was three years this month -- before Pearl harbor -- that this Central Flying Training Command base started training pilots to fly AAF planes. While the exact number of fliers trained here is still a military secret, young men who earned their wings at Foster Field have fanned out over the entire globe to lick the Axis.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the March 1, 1945, issue (page 2, column 1):
- Lt. Paul Roberts and wife, of Tallahassee, Fla., have been here the past week with his parents, the V.K. Roberts, his brother Victor John and family, and Mrs. Roberts' aunt, Mrs. F.J. VanNada, and husband. Before returning to Florida, they are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Collins, at Newburg, Ind.
This March 8, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- After spending two weeks here with his parents, the V.K. Roberts, and other relatives, Lt. Paul Roberts and wife have returned to his base at Tallahassee, Fla.
This June 21, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 7, column 4:
- Lt. Paul Roberts was here several days this week visiting his parents, the V.K. Roberts, and brother, Victor John, and family. He left for Bartoo Field, Florida, where he is stationed, today.
This October 25, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 3:
- Bartow, Fla. (Special) -- Paul W. Roberts, 2nd Lieut., after 32 months in the army, has been released in accordance with present War Department Regulations at AAF Spearation Base, Chanute Field, Rantoul, Ill.
- Recently stationed at Bartow army air field since March 11, 1945, he was assigned to duty as a trainee fighter pilot on P-51 Mustangs.
- Paul, who is the son of Atty. and Mrs. Victor K. Roberts, Lowell, was a student at Indiana U. before entering the service.
The following article from an unidentified newspaper was found in Town Historian Richard Schmal's obituary collection:
- Paul W. Roberts, age 66, of Lowell, passed away Fri., Nov. 6, 1987. He
is survived by his wife, Catherine Roberts; one son, David Roberts of
Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Patricia Nestor of Lowell; five
grandchildren, Ryan and Justin Nestor, both of Lowell, and Eric, Danny
and Mandy Roberts, all of Phoenix; and two brothers, Victor John
(Autumn) Roberts, and Charles (Grace) Roberts, both of Lowell. Funeral
services were conducted at 11 a.m. November 10 from the Sheets-Love
Funeral Home, with Rev. John K. Wortinger officiating. Burial followed
at Lowell Memorial Cemetery. Paul Roberts was the retired owner of
Roberts Ins. Agency in Lowell. He was a World War II military veteran,
a graduate of Indiana University and a member of the First United
Methodist Church in Lowell. Memorials in his name may be made to the
First United Methodist Church of Lowell.
