Richard Irving Scritchfield (1853-1925)
- Richard Irving Scritchfield, son of Hiram and Esther Scritchfield, was born December 4, 1853, about one mile west of Creston. He died at his home in Lowell January 30, 1925, having lived 71 years, 1 month and 26 days.
Richard was the youngest child of a family of fourteen of which two remain: Francis Wood of Lowell and Alexander Scritchfield of Creston.
He was united in marriage with Sarah A. Garrison September 7, 1872, traveling life's road together in happiness for fifty-two years. Five children were born of this marriage: Robert S., Hiram Cassius, Logan James and two daughters who died in infancy.
Richard Scritchfield was converted in 1879, uniting with the Methodist Episcopal church in Creston, June 15, 1879, and was baptized in Cedar Lake by Rev. Sanders. His everyday life showed that he tried to follow in the footsteps of his Master.
He was a respected member of the Lodge of Knights of Pythias number 300 where his genial disposition made him an ever welcome brother. He was a true friend, with a good word for every one; a kind and loving father, a devoted husband. The past six years he spent caring for his invalid wife, who with three sons, five grand children, one sister and one brother and a host of friends mourn his passing.
Funeral was held at the Methodist church Monday at 10:30 o'clock. Rev. C.A. Brown preached the sermon. Interment Lowell cemetery.
Undertaker Weaver had charge of the burial service.
