Ritter Family Tree

Ritter Family Tree

The following family tree, researched by Ernest J. Fredregill, comes from a family history he compiled, entitled An Old Album of Interest to Ritters, Livingstons, Hilzleys and Islers:
John and Barbara Ritter settled in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, around 1815. He was a blacksmith. John Ritter's father may also have been named John and lived in Bedford, Pennsylvania, but this has not been confirmed as of this writing.

    First Generation

    NAME BORN DIED MARRIED SPOUSE

    (Williams Co., OH)

[* NOTE -- According to Phillip Ritter: "Based on census information, Jacob Ritter's birth year could vary anywhere from ca. 1815 (1850 census) to ca. 1819 (1860 and 1880 census). Ca. 1819 represents the most common age given. The brother John's age also varied, but it is pretty clear that Jacob was younger. The sister Catherine was born on 19 Apr. 1822, according to her tombstone. This is consistent with her census ages. She was not present in the 1820 census, but was listed in 1830, after her father John Ritter had died. In 1837 George Ritter (my ancestor) was named her guardian (she would have been 15), presumably because the mom (Barbara) had died. In 1840 Catherine married John Himes."]

    Generation Three

Sarah (Sally, Sallie) Ritter and her husband Jacob Baughman had 4 or five children.

George Ritter and his wife Catherine Shaffer had four sons and five daughters. George Ritter was a "Dunkard" preacher.

Abraham Ritter and his wife Ann "Nancy" Foster had seven children. Their youngest child was Louisa Jane Ritter (June 28, 1848-Dec. 27, 1926). See the Livingston Family Tree for more information on her family line.

Jacob Ritter and his wife Sarah Hamman had more than one daughter and more than one son. Daughter Elizabeth Ritter married Charles Hoevet. One of the sons of Jacob and Sarah Ritter was named David.

    Generation Four

David Ritter (son of Jacob and Sarah Ritter) married and had three sons: Bert, Luther W., and Kitchel Ritter. Luther W. married a woman from Ireland named Katherine, and they had three children (Generation Five): Lorraine, Joseph, and David Ritter.

A 1909 Lake County Directory listed the following Ritters:
