Robert D. "Buck, Bucky" Carstens
- Mrs. Sadie Carstens received a letter from Robert (Buckie) Carstens, who is taking his boot training at Sampson, N.Y., telling that he had been appointed athletic director of his group, of which he feels quite proud. He sent his best regards to all his friends here.
A September 6, 1945, Lowell Tribune article (page2, column 1) mentions that Apprentice Seaman Robert (Buckie) Carstens was home on furlough from Sampson, N.Y. after completing his "boot" training.
This September 13, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:
- Three Second Class Seamen, Bob Carstens, Clayton Bahr and Sherard Henry, Jr., all of whom have been home on leave after completing their boot training at Sampson, New York, returned there Monday to await further orders.
This November 15, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- Robert (Buckie) Carstens, S 2/c, wrote his mother last week from Okinawa Bay, that he was going on to Shanghai to join the 7th fleet. He was well when he wrote.
This May 30, 1946, Lowell Tribune article was found no page 5, column 4:
- Robert "Bucky" Carstens phoned from Portland, Oregon Monday night that he had just arrived there from an overseas "hitch" with the navy. "Bucky" said he would be home on leave in a short time.
The following August 8, 1946, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 4:
- Robert "Bucky" Carstens, S 2/c, arrived home Sunday after receiving his discharge from the navy at Great Lakes.

- Age 63, a lifelong area resident living in both Lowell and Merrillville, passed away in St. Anthony Medical Center, Crown Point, Wednesday, June 19, 1991. He was a retired welder at Inland Steel in the Mobile Equipment Department with 38 years of service. A 1945 graduate of Lowell High School. A member of the Inland Steel 25 Year Club and United Stellworkers Local 1010. A World War II Navy veteran--awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon. A member of the American Legion Post No. 20 in Crown Point and the F.O.P.A. No. 168 in Merrillville. Survived by wife, Mae; 1 son, Jack (Donna) Carstens of Housten, Texas; 1 daughter, Christy (Bob) Vanderkolk of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; 2 stepsons, Terry Wallace of Crown Point, Ken Wallace of Valparaiso; 1 stepdaughter, Nanette (Jay) Clark of Muskego, Wisconsin; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; 3 sisters, Violet Nicholson of Joliet, Illinois, Delsene Gordon of Boswell, Indiana, Joan (Neil) Swanson of Lansing, Illinois; 1 brother, Don Carstens of Kankakee, Illinois. Funeral services Saturday, June 22, 1991, 10 a.m. at the Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, Rev. Duane Schmidt officiating. Burial Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Friends may call Friday, 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. Legion memorial service Friday evening, 7: 30 p.m.
