Clayton Dean "Hershey" Bahr
- Clayton Bahr, son of the Ernest Bahrs, who enlisted in the Navy recently, is taking his boot training at Sampson, New York.
This August 30, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- Clayton Bahr, A.S., who is taking his "boot" training at Sampson, N.Y., phoned his parents, the Ernest Bahrs, last Thursday night. "Hershey" said he was feeling fine and expected to be home on leave about the first of September.
A September 6, 1945, Lowell Tribune article (page2, column 1) mentions that Apprentice Seaman Clayton Bahr was home on furlough from Sampson, N.Y. after completing his "boot" training.
This September 13, 1945, Lowell Tibune article was found on page 1, column 6:
- Last Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bahr enterained about fifty relatives and friends in honor of their son, Clayton Bahr, S 2/c, home from Sampson, N.Y., after completing his boot training. A delicious pot luck dinner was served the guests and the remainder of the day was spent in visiting, singing and playing games. Clayton left Monday to return to his base to await further orders.
- Three Second Class Seamen, Bob Carstens, Clayton Bahr and Sherard Henry, Jr., all of whom have been home on leave after completing their boot training at Sampson, New York, returned there Monday to await further orders.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the January 17, 1946, issue (page 2, column 2):
- Clayton Bahr, S 2/c son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bahr is home on a ten day leave. "Hershey" has been stationed at the Naval Air Station at Jacksonville, Florida since September. He wanted to see snow when he came home so the weather man provided a nice snow storm on Friday the day of his arrival home.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the January 24, 1946, issue (page 1, column 2):
- Mr. and Mrs. William Bahr gave a family party for their grandson, Clayton Bahr, last Thursday night, January 17th. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bahr and daughter, Janice; Mr. and Mrs. Neil Bahr; Mr. and Mrs. August Hadders; Mr. and Mrs. Milford Bahr; Caryl, Norma and Clayton Bahr; Jackie Gross, Cleo Roy and Robert Spry.
- Card games were played, followed by a very adequate lunch.
- Clayton leaves soon to join his unit in Florida and with all of our good wishes. It was also Ernest Bahr's birthday, but the writer never found out which one! Many happy returns, nonetheless.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the January 24, 1946, issue (page 7, column 3):
- While in Gary Monday night week Cleo Roy and Clayton Bahr were in an auto accident in which Clayton suffered a head injury. They thought they were on a through street, but they came to the end of it and before they could stop, hit the guard rails. They went to the hospital and when they returned for the car it had disappeared. The car was fully insured, and last Monday, a week later, the car was located in Nobel's garage in Gary, where it had been taken. Looks like someone would have some explaining to do as to how the car got there.
- Mr. and Mrs. August Hadders gave a turkey dinner in honor of their grandson, Clayton Bahr, S 2/c, who is home on a ten-day leave from Jacksonville, Florida. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bahr, Clayton and Janice; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wille, Henry Graves, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Kingery, Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. G.S. Conners. In the afternoon Robert Spry, S 1/c, also home on leave from Camp Perry, Va., and Dr. H.B. Burns of Chicago, called to see Clayton. A telegram came for Clayton during the afternoon giving him a five-day extension on his leave. Needless to say that he was very happy to receive this message. The extension of leave was given on account of an auto accident in which he was injured requiring several stitches to be taken on his forehead.
This May 16, 1946, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 7, column 3:
- Clayton Bahr, S 1/c. who is stationed at Jacksonville, Fla., gave his mother Mrs. Ernest Bahr, a real surprise on Mothers' Day when he called her on the phone. They had a real old time visit.
This July 25, 1946, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 1:
- S 1/c Clayton Bahr has been discharged from the navy and is now at home here.
