The following excerpt from a Lowell Tribune article, found in the February 10, 1944, issue (page 1, column 5) mentions Lowell citizens who were inducted into service from Local Board No. 1, Crown Point:
- Lowell boys in the list were Alfred A Carroll, son of the Charles Carrolls; Robert W. Ewer, son of the Fred Ewers; and Norman Ketelaar, son of the Jacob Ketelaars.
The following June 29, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 3, column 2:
Three Lowell Soldiers Together
The following letter from Pvt. Robert Ewer, who is taking a course at Medical Technicians school, Lawson General Hospital, Atlanta, Ga., was received by his parents, the Fred Ewers, last week:
- Here's one for the news. While I was standing in the chow line tonight, who should tap me on the shoulder but Ed Witt from Lowell high. After expressing my surprise at meeting him, he asked if Mr. Selett, our former science teacher, was here. I assured him that he wasn't, but he insisted that he saw a man that looked just like him. After I ate, I began a search and sure enough, I found a man who looked exactly like Mr. Selett. This was three weeks before I actually knew he was here. It's too bad I graduate and leave the two Lowell fellows here, but we still have three weeks together.
I imagine Mr. Selett wonders why I looked at him so long before I spoke. I told him it was because I thought he was in Alaska.

The following July 20, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 4, column 2:
Home for Few Days
Pvt. Robert Ewer, stationed with the medical corps at Ft. Bragg, S.C., arrived home last Thursday for a few days visit with his parents, the Fred Ewers, and other relatives' and friends.Another artilce in the same issue of the paper (page 5, column 4) added:
- A family gathering, in honor of their son, Pvt. Robert Ewer, was held at the home of the Fred Ewers last Sunday. Present were Atty. and Mrs. Bert Ewer and family of Marion, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Horner and family of Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Banser and daughters, Crown Point, and Mr. and Mrs. Julius Pattee and family of Lowell.
The following August 31, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Arrives in England
A letter from Pvt. Robert Ewer to his parents, the Fred Ewers, says he has arrived safely in England with his outfit. Bob, who is in the medical corps, says they have set up their hospital and are now quite busy.This June 28, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, columns 1-2:
- A letter received by Mrs. Julius Pattee from her brother, Pvt. Robert Ewer, with the medical corps, informs her that he is now stationed near Birmingham, England, in the general hospital. Bob said he was well, and very busy. During his spare time he sings in the choir and assists in conducting plays for the hospital patients.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the May 16, 1946, issue (page 5, column 1):
- Sgt. Robert Ewer, son of the Fred Ewers arrived home a few days ago following his discharge from the Army. He was attached to the 64th field hospital for 2 years, spending a year in the European theatre during the war.
