    Roy Daum, 77; Former Area Teacher Dies New Year's Day

    Roy Daum, 77, lifetime resident of Lake county, succumbed to a lingering illness on New Year's day.

    Mr. Daum, educated in Lowell schools, attended Valparaiso U. and taught in area schools for 16 years prior to moving to East Chicago, where he workded in industry for 25 or 30 years. He was a member of the Methodist church and Masonic lodge.

    The son of John and Susie (Masters) Daum, Roy was born February 6, 1877, on the Daum farm northeast of Lowell. His wife, the former Carrie Caster also of this community, passed away eight years ago.

    Survivors include a son, Arnold R. of Evanston, Ill.; a daughter, Miss Ruth Lucile Daum of Ashland, Ore.; two brothers, Jesse of Lowell and Don of Seattle, Wash.; and a grandchild.

    Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, in the Sheets Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Hotchkiss officiating. Burial was in the Lowell cemetery beside his wife.
