The following October 26, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5 column 4:
- Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Karlson of Hebron, Indiana, visited their son, Roy at Great Lakes, Sunday afternoon. Harold Haberlin, also taking boot training there, joined them later in the afternoon. Both boys looked fine and enjoyed having visitors for the first time in six weeks.
The following November 9, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5 column 3:
- The Misses Hellen Sark, Louetta Childress and Irene Karlson went to Great Lakes Sunday to visit Irene's brother, Roy, who is still taking his boot training. Roy looked fine, but is anxiously awaiting the day when he can discard his "boots" and come home for a few days visit.
This December 14, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
Attending Quartermaster School
Roy Karlson, s2/c, is now attending Quartermaster school at Gulfport, Miss. He recently completed his "boot" training at Great Lakes and spent a 9-day leave here.This Lowell Tribune article was found in the April 19, 1945, issue (page 2, column 1):
- S 2/c Roy Karlson has been here the past week visiting his parents and other relatives and friends. Roy, who has been stationed at Gulfport, Miss., expects to go to the west coast when he reports for duty.
This April 26, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:
- Roy Karlson, S 2/c has returned to Shoemaker, Calif., after spending a leave at home.
