Sallie Sampson Smith (1802-1895)

- Mrs. Sallie Sampson Smith was born in South Hampton, Mass., on February 3rd, 1802, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eliza Pinkerton, Lowell, Indiana, March 19th, 1895, aged 93 years, 1 month and 16 days. At the age of 15 years she came with her parents to Chattauqua county, New York, where in January 1826 she was united in marriage to Uriel Smith, to which union ten children were born. Soon after her marriage she united with the Freewill Baptist church, in which organization she held her membership upwards of 65 years. In 1861 she removed with her family to Crawford county, Pennsylvania, where she was called upon to part with her husband by death; he dying March 31st, 1869. In November of that year she with her youngest daughter Jennie A. came to Lowell, Indiana, where she has continued to reside with her children. Of her ten children six survive her, viz: Henry, of Centerville, Pennsylvania; Sylvenas, of Garden Plain, Kansas; Mrs. Esther Fuller and Mrs. Nancy Cox, of Crown Point, Indiana; Mrs. Eliza Pinkerton and Mrs. Jennie Ragon, of Lowell, Indiana. She also leaves 31 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grand children; a step daughter, Mrs. McIntrie, now of Lowell, several step grand children, together with a number of relatives and friends who mourn her. Her funeral took place Thursday, March 21st at 10 a.m. from the Christian church, Rev. A.M. Hootman officiating, after which interment took place in the Lowell cemetery where she will rest in quiet slumber until the great resurrection morn. May her rest be peaceful.
