Sheridan E. Ruge (died 1978)

A February 10, 1944, article in the Lowell Tribune (page 2, column 1) about Huron Ruge mentioned that his brother Sheridan had enlisted in the navy several months ago.


The following June 22, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 3:
    Lt. (j.g.) Sheridan Ruge and wife of Dayonne, N.J., were here visiting with his mother, Mrs. Pearl Ruge, and other relatives and friends.

This Lowell Tribune article was found in the June 7, 1945, issue (page 7, column 3):
    Lt. and Mrs. Sheridan Ruge have returned to Camp Perry, Va., after spending a 10-day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Pearl Ruge, and other relatives here, and Mrs. Ruge's relatives in Chicago and Gary.

This July 12, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
    Mrs. Pearl Ruge has received a phone message from her son. Lt. Sheridan Ruge, saying he is being transferred to the west coast for further training.

This August 2, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 3:
    Week-end guests in the home of Mrs. Pearl Ruge and her sister, Miss Sadie Nichols, were: Lt. and Mrs. Sheridan Ruge, Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Schultz of South Bend, Miss Marjorie Rigg and Mrs. Morris Driscoll and daughter of Oak Park, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Ruge and son, Dick, and Mrs. Huron Ruge, Randy and Dawn Lynn. The occasion was in honor of Lt. Ruge, who came from Camp Perry, Va., on his way to the Pacific area.

A copy of the following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    Local Man Elected Director of Indiana Area of Homebuilders

    Sheridan Ruge, an associate of the Lowell Lumber Company, Inc., was recently elected to the board of directors of the Northern Indiana Association of Homebuilders, for a two-year term.

    Installation of officers will take place at the association's annual dance, January 12, at Gary County Club.

    The National Association of Homebuilders will hold its annual convention in Chicago January 20-24.

    Wayne Kurtz of Crown Point is president of the Northern Indiana group.


The following obituary comes from a Sept. 20, 1978, issue of the Lowell Tribune, page 24, column 1:
    Sheridan E. Ruge, age 67*, of Lowell, passed away Wednesday, Sept 13, 1978, at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point. He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice, and one brother, Huron Ruge, of Lowell. Funeral services were held Sept. 15 at the First United Methodist Church of Lowell with Rev. W. Lynn Henry officiating. Burial took place at Lowell Memorial Park. Arrangements were handled through Sheets Funeral Home in Lowell. Mr. Ruge was a sales agent, a World War II veteran, a member of American Legion Post 101, of Lowell, a member of VFW Post 6841 of Lowell, a member of Colfax Masonic Lodge 378 of Lowell and a member of the Medina Temple of Chicago.
* NOTE -- Although this obituary puts Mr. Ruge's age at 67 when he died in Sept. 1978, the 1930 school enumeration book listed his birth date as Jan 28, 1910, which would have made hime 68 if it was correct.
