This July 26, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found page 2, column 2:
    Farewell parties over the weekend honored Sherrill Snyder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder, who enlisted in the Air Force. Sherrill, who was a popular L.H.S. athlete, continues to be a favorite of the baseball fans. He, together with Johnny Doolittle of Lowell and Dick Shaffer of Crown Point, left Indianapolis at 6:40 p.m., Tuesday for Lackland Air Force Base in Texas where they will receive their basic training.

Another article in column 4 of the same page of the paper adds the following:

    SHERRILL SNYDER LEAVES FOR TEXAS AMID WELL WISHES

    Following the baseball game at Oakland Park Sunday afternoon in which Sherrill Snyder played, about 50 members of Snyder-Williams families greeted Sherrill at the close of the game and all enjoyed a weiner roast and picnic supper. The evening was spent visiting and extending best wishes to Sherrill, Air Force enlistee, who left on Monday morning. He will receive his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

    On Thursday evening Sherrill was the honoree at a farewell party in the home of his parents where many friends gathered to wish him well.

The following August 16, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
    Letters from Shirl Snyder tell of the terrific heat in Texas. Stationed at Sheppard Field, he and Johnny Doolittle have remained together since enlisting in the Air Force on July 23rd (John has the lower bunk -- Shirl the upper). The boys will be glad to receive letters from home friends. Addresses: Pvt. Shirl Snyder, A.F. 16385725, Fl. 1897, B.T.S. 3742, Sheppard A.F.B., Texas, and Pvt. John Doolittle A.F. 16385711, Flight 1897, B.T.S. (Basic Training Station) 3742, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.
This September 27, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 5:
    Pfc. Shirl Snyder, stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, surprised his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder, with a telephone call Sunday. Having completed his basic training, Shirl, who was already experienced in mechanics, is now working as a machinist at Sheppard Field.
The following November 1, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
    Pfc. Shirl Snyder arrived home from Sheppard Air Base, Texas, early Saturday morning to spend the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder. He left Sunday night for Selfridge Air Base near Detroit, Mich., to report at 8 a.m. Monday, for further instructions as to where he will be stationed. Shirl's many friends and relatives were delighted to see him -- his first visit home since his enlistment last July.
The following November 15, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
    Pfc. Shirl Snyder spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder. Shirl has been sent to northern Michigan. His new address is Pfc. Shirl A. Snyder, AS16385725, 63rd Ftr. Sqdn., Oscoda A.F.B., Michigan.
This February 7, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:
    Pfc. Shirl A. Snyder was the weekend guest of his parents, the Arthur Snyders. Shirl, a plane machinist, is stationed at Oscoda Air Force Base in northern Michigan.
The following February 28, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 5:
    A change of address is sent to Lowell friends, via the Tribune, by Shirl Snyder, who will be happy to hear from friends at home or in service: Pfc. Shirl A. Snyder, Box 385, 84th Base Sqd., Oscoda AFB, Mich.
This March 20, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:

    It's Corporal Snyder Now

    A phone call to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder, revealed the news of Shirl Snyder's promotion to corporal. Shirl enlisted in the Air Force and left for Indianapolis last July 23rd and was sent to Lackland Field near San Antonio, Texas. From there he was transferred to Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas where he received his basic training. Late in October he went to Selfridge Field in Michigan and since November has been stationed in northern Michigan at Oscoda Air Force Base. Shirl is looking forward to a weekend pass in the near future.
This March 27, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 1:
    Cpl. Shirl Snyder arrived at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder, this week from Oscoda Air Force Base in northern Michigan. After 28 days spent at home Shirl will report May 2nd at Camp Stoneman in California, from where he will receive further assignment. Friends wish Shirl a most pleasant vacation at home.
This April 17, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 2:
    Shirl Snyder, home on 30-day leave, was guest of honor at a party held Sunday in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder. Present to enjoy the evening of visiting, games and refreshments were Shirl's fiancée, Miss Joan Smith of Crown Point, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Snyder, Mr. and Mrs. Vance Crisp, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Duncan, Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Chism and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sharkey.
The following May 15, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 5:
    Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder returned home Saturday night from a trip to the west coast where they took their son, Sgt. Shirl, and his wife, Joan, to Camp Stoneman, Calif., from where Shirl was issued orders that will take him to the Far East for service with the Air Force. His wife, who remained for another week, will fly home. The Snyders traveled the southern route to California and enroute were guests of Arthur's sister, Kathryn, and family. They returned by way of the northern states and relate seeing lots of snow at Downer's Pass.
This June 19, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
    Lowell friends will be interested in learning that Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder have received word from their son, Shirl, informing them of his safe arrival in Japan. Shirl is at Hakata, about 400 miles south of Yokahama, at a tent encampment. His quarters are clean and the food is good -- things to be appreciated after the conditions of the boat trip overseas when water was rationed and no showers allowed. The following August 28, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 3:
    From Nagorja, Japan, comes news of two local servicemen, Wilbur "Squeak" Hegnauer, and Shirl Snyder, who met at Nagorja airport while waiting for their planes. Shirl had flown from his station at Itazuke Island, off Kyusu, Japan, with the base softball team, to participate in a seven-day tournament with other Japanese bases. After taking second place in the tourney, Shirl was waiting to board a plane to Itazuke when he met "Squeak" who was returning to Korea after a short leave spent in Japan. After much reminiscing, pictures were taken and the boys departed for their respective bases. "Squeak" anticipates being sent back to the U.S. very soon.
This September 18, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 1:
    Shirl Snyder, stationed with the Air Force 435 miles from Osaka, Japan, recently made a trip to the general hospital in that city to visit Bob Tunnell, a patient there since July 23rd. Injured in the course of duty, Bob sustained a serious leg fracture. His parents, the Robert Tunnells, Sr., anticipate his arrival home for Christmas.
