WAR VETERAN CALLED SUNDAY
THOMAS GRUBB, SPANISH-AMERICAN VETERAN, PASSES AWAY SUDDENLY.
News of the sudden death of Thomas Grubb, veteran of the Spanish-American War, early Sunday morning was a great shock to his many friends in Lowell. While it was known that he was not in the best of health and that he was troubled with heart attacks, it was not thought that his ailment was as serious as to cause his death. He was stricken with a heart attack about 4 a.m. and passed away at about 8 a.m.Mr. Grubb has been a resident of Lowell for several years and during that time he has made a great many friends who will be saddened by his sudden passing.
Early in the beginning of the Spanish-American War he enlisted in an Iowa regiment and was soon sent with his regiment to the Philippine Islands where he saw much hard service and received many medals and citations for good work as a soldier.
He was a man who was well educated and it was a pleasure to converse with him on the topics of the day, he being at all times well posted on the affairs of the nation and the world.
Obituary
Thomas Henry Grubb, son of John L. and Adeline Hayes Grubb, was born July 1, 1865, at Columbus City, Iowa, and died April 22, 1934, at the age of 68 years, 9 months, 22 days.
In 1909 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lillian Wood Campbell. To this union were born two daughters.
He leaves to revere his memory, his wife, Lillian, daughters Estella Gretchen and Harriette Grace, stepson Donald Campbell of Chicago; one sister, Mrs. Adelade Leuty of Morning Sun, Iowa, two half sisters, Mrs. W.A. Colip of Berwyn, Ill., and Miss Lillie M. Grubb of Denver, Colo.
He enlisted in the Spanish-American war with the 57th Iowa Inf., served until peace was declared, having fought in twenty-six battles.
Funeral services at the home, on Tuesday afternoon, April 24; J.E. Poer, minister; Weaver & Son, directing.
Members of Lowell Post American Legion performed the Legion ritualistic service at the Lowell cemetery, where interment took place.
