The following article was found in the April 6, 1944, Lowell Tribune on page 2, column 2:

    PROMOTED TO SERGEANT

    With the 12th AAF in Italy -- Promotion of Corp. Vernon E. Schutts to the rank of Sergeant was announced recently at headquarters of the 12th AAF.

    He enlisted in the AAF in May, 1942, at Indianapolis, Ind., and has been overseas since February, 1943, and is now serving as cook in a B-25 Mitchell group known as the Bobcats. His squadron served through the Tunisian, Pantellerian, Sicilian and Italian campaigns and his group made the largest mass flight across the Atlantic in the history of aviation without a loss.

    He attended school at Lowell, before entering the army. Mrs. Schutts resides at Crown Point.


A Sept. 28, 1944, Lowell Tribune article (page 3, column 3) about the 66th wedding anniversary of the J.A. Hoshaws mentioned that their serviceman grandson Verne Schuttz of East Chicago was currently on the Island of Corsica in the Mediterranean.
